Last year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety put out a list of used vehicles have fantastic safety ratings and short braking distances. Any of them would be perfect for a teen driver, but we particularly like the 2013 Subaru Outback or newer. Not only is this model very affordable, but it has standard all-wheel drive. Plus, when it comes time for your teen to head off to college, this car provides plenty of space for their boxes and bags.
Best Used Hybrid Car
You have to be cautious buying a used hybrid. You don't want the hybrid battery to die on you a few months after you drive off the lot. That's just one of the reasons we like the Toyota Camry Hybrid. Like many Toyota models, the Camry Hybrid is extremely reliable, scoring a five out of five from J.D. Power. Plus, even a used Camry Hybrid has a strong powertrain and an easy-to-use infotainment system to make your drive to Phoenix an enjoyable one.
Best Used Compact Pickup Truck
When you think of pickup trucks, you probably picture Ford or Ram. Brands like them shine in the full-size pickup truck category, but you probably don't know the compact pickup trucks as well. The Honda Ridgeline is our pick here. It combines the power of a truck with the comfort and technology that all Honda models have. This is a terrific truck if you want to haul equipment out of Gilbert, or if you need to bring the kids to school.
Best Used Compact Car
Compact cars like sedans and hatchbacks are excellent for commuting or joyrides. Sometimes you don't need a lot of space, you're just looking for an agile and enjoyable drive through Chandler. For that we recommend the Mazda3. Its ride is smooth and the steering is very responsive, and the interior includes some standard amenities like synthetic leather upholstery. It even received excellent safety ratings, with the IIHS awarding models with automatic emergency braking their Top Safety Pick designation.
Best Used Midsize SUV
When you do need space, you could go for a large SUV, but those can be more expensive, even used. Instead, we recommend the midsize Hyundai Santa Fe, which has up to 80 cubic feet of cargo space on the 2019 model year and can even fit up to seven passengers in Scottsdale. The Santa Fe has many standard features but also plenty of upgrades on each trim. It also has a reliability rating of four and a half out of five from J.D. Power, which makes it perfect for a used SUV that you can expect to last you for years to come.
